From the Colvins, Part One: Here We are, Lord!

“Behold, I come;

In the scroll of the book it is written of me.

I delight to do Your will, O my God,

And Your law is within my heart.” – Psalm 40:7-8

 We are here in Davao City, the Philippines, where the Lord and you have sent us. Again and again, our fellow missionaries exclaim over how swiftly everything is happening for us: that our support-raising went so well and so quickly; that we already have a house to move into next week; that next Tuesday, Matt will teach his first two classes for the missionary kids at Faith Academy. (Roman History and New Testament.) We are serving the God who “caught Philip away” after he baptized the Ethiopian eunuch, “and he was found at Azotus” (Acts 8); the God who gave Elijah strength to run faster than Ahab’s chariot. He has cleared away every obstacle and put us where He wants us to be.

 Our first experiences of Davao City are a mix of peace and calm in the home of our hosts, the McNeils (directors of the birth center), and the sensory overload of the bright colors and traffic of the city. It is a city of stark contrasts: There are shopping malls bigger and fancier than any in Cincinnati a stone’s throw away from scenes of dire poverty. We purchased foam mattresses in a modern furniture store, then ordered bamboo bed frames from a roadside stand roofed by leaking tarps.

Now that we are here, we want to have the same attitude that the Psalmist (Ps. 40:7-8) and Christ Himself have: a delight to do God’s will. He has not brought us here to be tourists, but to be neighbors. The good Samaritan, “when he came to where the man was,” served him.

In the coming week, Matt will begin serving the tribe to which he is sent: third-culture kids and missionary kids. Once we are settled in to our own home, Sora will begin using her hands and skills to show the love of Christ to mothers and babies at the birth center.

Thank you for helping us get here. Your prayers and generosity made it happen. We’re excited to see what God is about to do over the next year, and we’re glad to have you along for the adventure with us!

 – Matt and Sora
