I want to share with you one of the most powerful cases we have witnessed this year.
When she was just barely out of childhood, Mala* was trafficked into one of the most violent brothels we’ve ever seen; she was raped by as many as 20 men every day, beaten, humiliated and abused. She lost any hope of escape: “There are only two ways to get out of this brothel,” she said. “You either get sold to another brothel, or you die.”
But our IJM Kolkata team found her, and after six attempts, we were finally able to rescue her. While we pursued her trafficker and ensured he was brought to trial, Mala began to grow strong—and told us she wanted to protect other girls by telling her story in court.
Because of Mala’s testimony, the brutal man who trafficked her is now in prison, and his brothel’s door is permanently bolted closed. As one of my colleagues who helped bring him to justice this year said, “All it takes is one conviction of a man like him to keep hundreds of girls safe.”
That’s why we need to keep pressing forward. There are many more girls who need someone to protect them from violence. If you haven’t done so already, will you give a year-end gift today so we can continue to relentlessly search out, rescue and restore girls like Mala?
